Boom Sound recorder

Hello everyone.......or someone please,
Can anyone offer a suggestion as to why I cannot record anything on my PC. ie with the microphone.
I have checked the properties in the sound recorder and Nero audio editor, and nothing appears to be amiss. Is there something else I can check?
Oh yeah, I have checked that all the cables are plugged in.

Is the microphone muted? That is, if you tap it, do you get any sound out of your speakers? If not, it's either muted or not hooked up correctly. HTH

Yeah, sound does come from the speakers when I tap the mic.
Could it have anything to do with any of the media players I have.
