Damaged sound Card?

Is it possible to damage the sound card with an overly load blast of volume? I played back a recording without first adjusting the volume down. Now all sound (from a wave file, mp3 file, on windows media, the player my computer came with and a music CD) all have glitches. There are constant, frequent breaks in the sound, as if it is stuttering. Even the " ding" when mail arrives has a stutter - d-ding. Tried new speakers but they sound the same so I don't think it is the incredibly cheap speakers that came with my system.

The sound card is nothing more than a pre-amp with the speakers supplying the actual amplification. It is possible, but most of the blown sound cards I have seen come from using the wrong jack as the line-in.

longblades i have the same problem and after posting for several days have had no replies or answers! have you changed any settings on the sound card's control panel (sample rate, buffer size etc), that may be the problem although i have tried everything.

A repair reinstall of your OS and the removal and reinstall of your card's drivers seem in order.
If that won't do it then try the card in a friend's system.
