Agp
I have a computer that has an AGP 2X/4X. Would it be safer to search for an AGP4X slot maximum card or could I get an 4x/8X card?

I'm using a 8x/4x card in a 4x/2x slot. I don't think there's any safety issue there. You'll be fine either way.

The only thing that has to support it is the motherboard and any 4x AGP slot will accept any kind of other AGP size that the card has.
