2" black border on screen

My PC is always on and sometime overnight the size of browser window changed and I can't get it enlarged enough to fill the screen. There is an approx 2" black border around the open window. Using W98SE, IE 6, P2, 300mhz, 256 RAM

Is there a setting I could change or how would I correct this? Thanks, Dave

Welcome to PCMech, daveingram!

Is it the browser window size that changes, or is the monitor that shrinks the display?

From what you described, it sounds like the monitor. Try expanding the window size on the monitor with the control knobs/buttons found on the monitor.

If that's not it, did you try clicking the maximize button on the browser window? Or is this the desktop you are describing, not an IE6 browser window?

Also, what is your resolution?

My problem is with the desktop size showing on the monitor with a 2" black line around it. I have tried expanding the window size using the controls on the front of the monitor but none of the monitor controls appear to be working. My resolution is set at 1024x768, high color (16 bit).

What computer is that on? If it's an HP or some other PC with that as a on board video card, I would say more than likely it's that video card. That card doesn't seem to have a long life. If it's the video card, you can disable it, and put in a PCI video card.

I have an onboard video card and could put in another one. What is a PCI video card please> Would a defective video card account for the fact that non of the positioning button on my monitor solve the problem?

See if you can borrow another video card and see if it then works. A PCI video card is one that would go into your PCI slots in the back of the computer.

If the monitor controls do nothing, I'd suspect the monitor itself - the buttons should do *something*.
