no sound

I have gigabyte ultrapro 667 series motherboard with realtek ac97 onboard sound.Nvidia is the the video? anyhow I have that too.win xp home. part of the sound quit months ago and I have had sent SOS signals to several help spots without getting any help. I have uninstalled, reinstalled ac 97 more times than I can count, upgraded the driver too. I have sound for midi and anything that uses windows media player. Nothing in games and most email things and internet sites that don't use midis.I have some tutoria lcds that I can't use cause no sound and none of the microsoft sounds.I reformatted a 2nd hard drive with winxp pro and that also has no sound in all the same areas. I am a Grandma so I am not a beginner but also am not intermediate. The new hard drive was done with lots of great internet help!!! and it now is sitting on a shelf as I don't know how to get both to run an d use.......so any sound help will be appreciated
