Installing an old sound card
A while back I asked what could be done about crackling and skipping sound on my K6 machine. Several people suggested replacing the PCI Sound Blaster card with an old ISA card as it would use less CPU power. I have an old Jazz16 card from my old, old computer and I attempted to install it. Windows XP doesn't even see it. I have tried searching for new hardware with no success. Is this card just too old for Windows XP or is there a way to get it working?

Search for drivers online. You could install yourself by choosing the device you want when you add new hardware.

I think you may right on the too old thought Hi Ho. If it won't even see the card, you may be out of luck.

If this is the same machine running slowly that you've mentioned in another thread, this gets me thinking in a new area. You said this came with 98 originally, right? I'm thinking you should clear the CMOS and reset it. Have you tried that yet?

It is the same machine that runs slowly. What would clearing the CMOS do to solve my problems?

Search Ebay for "AWE64" - I see some buy it nows for 10 bucks. That's still a sweet card.
The primary reason for a K6 running slow is either bad cache or the cache is disabled in the bios. |
