Via Ac97 audio problem on new build

I just finished my first new build using the excellent directions provided by Pcmech, and everything went fine except that I've been unable to get any sound whatsoever from my onboard audio. I have a Shuttle AV49V/N mobo. I installed WinXP home and loaded the drivers as provided by Shuttle. When I try to load the audio driver, it gives me the message, "VIA Ac97 audio chipset is not enabled on this system...", then it tells me to enable in the Bios. This parameter is set to "auto" as it is supposed to be.

I've seen some similar postings on the web but nothing that seems to really help. Shuttle has been very slow with a response. I suspect it may have something to do with WinXP loading drivers that prevents identification of the Via hardware. Any ideas?

Go through bios and in integrated peripherils ,you should see reference to ac97,make sure it's enabled.
If this is the enhanced sound, the drivers XP loads don't work,go to Windows update and they have the certified driver there.
Do you see the sound icon in toolbar?
Have you checked device manager and what does it show?
Double check the manual for the possibilty of any jumpers related to sound.

Made sure Ac97 was enabled in Bios. I was able to add the driver, finally. At least now it shows up in the device manager. Now is gives me a new message, "Device cannot start (code 10)". I downloaded another driver version but had the same problem.

Will keep working on it. No jumpers on the mobo associated with the onboard sound. Maybe I need to get in and make sure I don't have a connection between the board and case that's shorting the sound. Hoping to hear from manufacturer soon.

There should be a PCI Audio controller or something similar under Unkown devices in the Device Manager. 'Update' that to the driver in the WDM folder from the latest Combo packages.
The error from the setup program is a known bug.

Where would I find the Unknown devices in the device manager? I can't seem to find a PCI audio controller.
