video out

I have a compaq laptop with xp and a s-video out port. I am trying to view dvd's on my tv. I have and adapter that changes the svideo to rca which goes into the tv. I can get audio to work on the tv, but not the video.
I tried to change settings for the display, but it doesn't give my any options for the video out.
Any help?
Thanks

This may be a long shot, but have you got the tv itself set to receive the signal? Like on our tv, we watch tv on the main input but if we want to watch a VCR tape we have to change the tv to Video 1. Ours also has Video 2, 3 and 4 too for the various inputs on the back of the tv and whatever device is plugged into them. See if your remote has a button that says "Display" and try pushing it while the DVD is playing and see if your tv has alternate Video channels like ours does. If so, it should change each time you hit the button. I've seen the setting be on the Video/TV button on some tvs too.

EDIT: Or is this what you meant when you said you changed the settings for the Display? I was thinking you meant you changed something for the video card settings. Sorry if you've tried this already.

Does your TV have 3 RCAs? Like a yellow, red, and white?

ok, I figured it out. I forgot to check the box that says "extend my desktop to second monitor". I got it to work however is there a way to have the second monitor "mirror" the laptop?
The only way I can get it to work is to open up a window on the laptop and drag it over to the tv, which is fine but is hard to read the pull down menus on the tv. I'd rather be able to have the tv mirror the laptop.

If you are using simple Windows dual monitor support, mirroring is not possible. The only way you can mirror is if your video driver has a specific setting to do this.
