Help With Audio Driver Reinstall

Hi there folks;

well for some reason the sound driver on a system at work has disappeared and I am unable to re-install the driver. Can someone help?

The system is a dell optiplex desktop
running windows 98SE. it has soundMAX integrated digital audio.

We get no sounds at all from the speakers.

The device manager says

"The NTKERN.VXD, MMDEVLDR.VXD device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (code 2)"

"To fix this , Click Update Driver to update the device driver"

When I click update driver it says that the best driver is already installed for this device and gives a file location

windows\inf\OEMO.INF

I tried to download the driver and I tried to use the driver on the Dell resource disk, but when I navigate to the file it doesn't seem to like the file or location.

Can anyone help m through this? I have resinstalled drivers before no prob on XP but this machine has got me stumped. IS there something I need to fix in the registry or something?

Reinstalling windows might solve things, but I would prefer not to because the computer is poorly organized, has no removable media for backup, and making backups for a reinstall would be difficult.

Thanks for the advice!
