Intel or AMD? You should be able to build about anything you want for that price.

Is AMD geared more towards gamers and Intel more towards software apps?

No, it's personal preference. They are both fine processors for the job.

Just choose whichever one you want, not one is better than the other.

Regardless, we can help you on GPU - it wouldnt' really matter what GPU you got, as long as it has AGP 8X (as most MOBOs sold today have them).

With your budget, I'm looking along the lines of the ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 as a good graphics card. At Newegg, the Sapphire Radeon 9800 Pro 128 is at 210+ USD. That is, of course, if you mean multimedia by gaming, and not multimedia Apps. If it is Apps you're looking at, they are 2D and I would recommend the Matrox P750, which is known to run 2D programs and apps really well. However, with the latter, 3D support is limited.

With the AMD / Intel thing, just think of it this way - since both companies are at a heated rivalry, it wouldn't make sense if one is clearly better than the other, or one would definately override the other. Being an Intel guy for most of my life, I must say that AMD is as good as Intel, and whatever your decision, I do not think you will regret. Just remember that if you get Intel, to go with a Northwood core.

Hope that helps,
kram
