Question Copy Protected VHS to DVD

First of all, is it legal for me to transfer copy protected videos to DVD? I own several VHS movies that I would like to put onto DVD or even VCD...

I've tried capturing the video (without any luck) using an ATI AIW 9000. All I get is a mostly green screen.

Is there any software out there that will allow me to do this?

I didn't think VHS tapes were or could be copy protected. It should work unless there is something I am unaware of. Did you try some other tapes or even capturing TV through the VCR to see if it's a software problem or something?

VCR's can have Macrovision copyprotection. I don't know if any software can remove it for you but there are hardware solutions. But the green thing you are describing is not a symtom of Macrovision protection.

That green screen is due to copyprotection. You can buy this box if you want to get rid of the copy stuff but Im not sure on how legal that is, my dad had one but it disappeared lol.

Is it legal? Yes, under "fair use" for personal use as a backup.

Can you do it? That's a whole different story and we can't help with bypassing copy protection here because that is NOT legal.

Is this fair? No comment. Forum rules apply.

ATI OEM software won't record copyrighted material. Even non-copyrighted material, the best ATI settings result in files that are of proprietary ATI format.

When I record from VCRs and DVD players hooked to my computer, I use a freeware called Virtual VCR. It produces a standard AVI file, if there is such a thing!

From there, you do whatever. The program is fairly intuitive. You just can't run the ATI TV when you are using it. Vitrual VCR has its own TV and tuner.

Tried Virtual VCR with no luck. Still have the green screen. Perhaps the newer ATI cards are more 'strict' than others....

Find and download the ffdshow package. It should cure your greenscreen.

Err copy protection? all i know of is that VHS tapes do indeed have a little hole in the front of the cassette with a little black square shaped thing in front of it, cover it with a little peice of paper and some selotape and it will record fine.. im not sure if that will solve your problem of recording onto your pc, but the question you asked is answered at least

Shadow - no, he is trying to record from a copy protected VHS to a DVD. The copy protection you are talking about prevents the VCR from recording ONTO THE TAPE. He is dealing with electronic copy protection, not physical copy protection.
