Have any download manager/ accelerators installed? That could be your problem, and simply uninstalling them wont help either. One of those "free" adware programs made my PC lock up in this forum...(why you all got a break from me for a long time). You can try finding a way to remove the adware, but the dammage those things cause can cut deap.

go here to get free proggy to remove spyware put there by other free proggies. (Does that make sense?) but it works well. Only problem is some of them don't work when you remove spyware
