I would say hotmail because if you get a infected email it wont go in your computer just by opening it, I think.

I like Hotmail better. I like the interface and the fact that an email cannot do aything bad by simply reading it. The junk mail filters are also excellent in Hotmail.

You only get infections through attachments. If you watch what you're doing and who you're getting attachments from, you should be fine either way.
Personally, I prefer OE because I can access all may email accounts at the same time, rather than going to all the seperate web-based email pages.

There are security holes in OE that allow malicious code to be run through the preview pane.

I'm setting up to run both.
Thanks guys! My aim in life, just now, is to keep family and friends from getting tagged with all the various hijackers and trojans ( which is why I'm switching everone to Firefox). I always thought that Hotmail would be spam central but it seems I was wrong so now I'll be comparing it to OE seriously. If you've got more e-mail clients, not Google for now, let me know. |

I use OE and I have the preview pane turned off, that way my mail doesn't open unless I double click it to open. And you can get infected from just the e-mail its self, and don't even have to open an attachment to get it. Also I read in The Inguirer that there are websites, that can now infect you just by going to them. I saw that a few days ago, and didn't think of posting it here till now. Sorry.

None of the above - if you want secure POP mail, use an alternative email program like Pegasus. If you can deal with webmail, I suppose Hotmail is as good as any free service.
I use standard POP mail from Earthlink, and they have server side spam and virus filtering - and I use Pegasus to read it. |

If you are setting up to run Firefox, why not use Thunderbird. It isn't intergrated with Firefox but you can place a mail icon in the bookmark toolbar t access it.

Yeah, this isn't an either-or question. I have a Hotmail account that I access through OE.

I think I'll just try out a few different e-mail programs and see how things go.

I have had two hotmail accounts long before I owned a PC. One contains my name and accurate information and other is for anonymity. I used them at work and friends houses.
Since owing a PC I also use OE. OE is what I would consider my primary mail but I am very cautious as to who gets it. Just close family and friends and those few sites (mainly financial) that require a ISP based email. Everyone and every other requestor gets one of my hotmail email id's. Chas
