Exclamation Firefox not working

Hello once again.

I recently downloaded and tried to install firefox from the Mozilla site, because i had used it on a friend's comp, and i really liked it. Anyway, i tried to instal it, and it installed fine. Then i tried to use it...

Every time i open Firefox, and it tries to go to my home page, an error pops up, and it says, "failure in contacting (insert server of homepage here)" and nothing comes up...

I have re-installed it twice, and the same problem happens.

Any ideas? It cant contact any server, not just the one my homepage is on. No matter what URL i type in.

Do you have a firewall? Are you behind a proxy server?

How do you connect to the Internet?

I was behind a firewall, but then i screwed with norton, and got rid of it. No proxy server either.

It's an ADSL line, just high-speed cable.

Check out the connection settings in Firefox options, and make sure you have direct connection selected.

Another point, if you are not using a firewall at the moment you probably at least run windows firewall, although a different firewall such as Zonealarm and Sygate PE (both free) would do a much better job. Just make sure you only have one running at once.

Great to see you are changing to Firefox, or as mine currently calls itself Mozilla Firewale. It is a lot more secure than IE and a lot faster loading.

I cant be positive about the firewall thing, i'm only like 60% sure that we dont have one. I haven't checked into it. I'd have to ask my dad, he's in control of the Norton. (Norton sucks by the way, it screws everything up. Blocks web server space provider websites because it's, "real estate"... I hate it, which is why i messed with it, and got it 85% turned off.)

Yeah, i like Firefox better, a few of my friends who are relatively knowledgeable as far as computers, and who have built their own have it. I used it there, and decided to switch a long time ago, but i've had this problem for a long time...

I'll re-install it again, i uninstalled it when i couldnt get it working for like the third time, and let you know if i have any more problems. Thanks a lot for the help.

Are you sure that the firewall is disabled? There should be a little world icon in the system tray if you have NIS installed and you have the firewall.

it's installed, but i've tampered with it. So now it flashes the little stop sign with an "!" next to the world icon... I dont know, it may be there, it may not be there.

Right-click on the icon and make sure it is disabled.

You may also want to try creating an access rule for Firefox that lets it access the internet.

Yeah, i cant create access rules with the way it's set up now. I did get it working though, just by installing it onto my mom's account, and from there, Norton gives you the choice to block it, or let it go.

Thanks for the help everyone.
