Using FireFox

I just downloaded FireFox and have been using it instead of Internet Explorer. So far,so good. It's fast and no pop ups. Now, if I decide to use it exclusivly can I safely delete out Internet Explorer or do other programs depend on that/

I think it is possible, however windows update will not scan automatically for updates. You can however download updates manually and install them.

I would reccomend setting Firefox as the default, but don't completly remove access to IE. Some websites, very badly designed websites, require IE to view them, and don't let you in with Firefox. If you do want to get rid of IE, and are on XP SP1, go to start, then set program access and defaults, and you can 'turn' IE off.

You shouldnt be doing anything to delete IE. Firstly, attempting it will mess up your system because it is so tightly integrated with the rest of your XP. Secondly and more importantly, you need it for Windows Update. Consider it filesystem overheard and get on with using the browser you like.

Thanks Statica & others. Looks like I will keep IE to avoid any problems. FireFox does work better though. I set it as my default.

Tools > Options > General Tab, click the box in the "Default Browser" section.

Control Panel > Add/Remove and remove it.

Follow Andy's path to reset IE as the default browser and keep it updated with all the security patches.

EDITED to correct the path, I was thinking Firefox had an unistaller like Firebird did.

Mine does not have an uninstall routine in the start>programs menu, only Mozilla Firefox and Mozilla Firefox (safe mode).

Finally populated this time in the Add/remove section of control panel. Did not populate there the first time I went there.

Any tips as to why Java plug-in won't load? Checked all of the correct boxes as needed but keep getting error messages that it is not loaded.

I like Firefox but it is not of much use if I can't view pages.

Open Java settings from the Control Panel and set it to support Mozilla browsers.

Same thing happened to me with Java, much to my disappointment. It was a mess. I had to go back to IE. Just went into IE, and reset is as Default, and uninstalled Firefox from ADD/REMOVE Programs.

Are you sure you installed Sun's JRE?

It adds an entry to the Control Panel.

Yes, I've installed it now about 8 times and no control panel entry and when I try to go to one of the sites that needs it, it will say that I need to install it. When it says to click the button after the install, it will not click thru.

I'm just going to dump the Firefox this evening. Too much hassle for so little gain. Didn't need this much grief.

Had been listening to a radio talk show Saturday (Kim Komando) and heard such great things about Firefox and how good it was, but cannot agree with that assessment.

You may also try the XPI installer for Java:
http://java.sun.com/update/1.4.2/j2r...ndows-i586.xpi

It will automatically install and configure Java for you.

Tried that already, no work either. Just went to the the Firefox forum at Mozilla and it seemss that there are plenty of others that have a Java install problem with no answer.

Just went back to IE. Didn't realize the speed increase of Firefox until I went to load this site. Couldn't keep using though as JRE would not load correctly and when the Missus went to log on to her work site, it would not allow her to use the browser. Could have worked around that with the laptop for her to use but with the JRE not working it had to go. Maybe in the future.

I have Mozilla and it works for me for most sites, the best thing I didn't do however, is download that crappy sun java thing. I did it on my old computer and it screwed it up, glad I had that lesson cause I'll never do it again. I use IE for the sites where I need java like Pogo.com

Wondering how you manage to use both. When I put Mozilla (Firefox) on, it also set my IE to Firefox. When you opened IE, Firefox was there and also in the Mozilla shortcut.

I had hoped they would be independent but Firefox took IE over, at least on mine, both before and after I set Firefox to be the default.

I use mozilla not firefox, maybe thats the difference. I kept IE as my default and when I use that I use my start menu to access favourites. when I want to use mozilla I click on that icon on my desktop.
