oops don't know what happened

Very odd thing helping someone with a site and they loaded a load of stuff by ftp into the root folder i.e. /
the site then dissappeared never to be seen again and I can't figure out what she did or why. She did say she tried to delete stuff and there is no folder in the root site called web. It has a private a vti and images and one other which I just cant remember and when I open these folders they either have the site pages or a list of folders a to g. which I cant open. Was wondering if I could ping it but I can't remember how to do that or even if I can with windows me
