Is it true that most surfers have stopped using IE due to the fact that the browser has a tendency to download Spyware, Adware, etc...without the users knowledge? I thought I read that here not to long ago... any thoughts on that? I currently prefer Mozilla Firefox instead.

hmmmmm. “Most Users?” That would be about nine out ten people around the world that are on the internet. There’s so many people out there that STILL don’t know to avoid opening attachments. Those same people don’t know what a browser is, let alone go for a change.
I’m hoping like heck “most users” do make a switch. It’ll give the hackers a new play ground. They’ll get to go after ALL the vulnerabilities in the other browsers

Most would be 51 out of 100. I seriously doubt that 2% (2 out of 100) have stopped using IE. Considering the number of PC's that Dell, HP, Gateway, ect. sell daily loaded with XP and IE 2% may be high.
Keep in mind that the knowledgeable users on this forum constitute less than 1 tenth of 1% of users worldwide. Chas

It is true however that a number of sites, including Homeland security and CERT and recommending that users stop browsing with IE. However the larger %s (by a HUGE MARGIN) are still using IE.

I definitely wouldn't go so far as to say "most," but it is becoming more of an issue. I still think that most people use some version of IE (see http://www.upsdell.com/BrowserNews/stat.htm and http://www.mywebsite.force9.co.uk/).

I use Firefox. I'm concerned with IE though......if it has that many security holes etc...I just don't want ALL kinds of Spyware and Adware hijacking my browser. That stuff get's into the registry and really causes a BIG headache to get rid of. On the other hand IE is very, very stable! Duh! I guess so since it's written in Microsoft code. That's why I believe Netscape crashes so much...mainly because it's not written on the Windows platform!
