Yesterday I went to search for program for a game and clicked on the first link google got. It then installed the spyware that I had before reformatting. There was a huge stop sign on the page and a bunch of other stuff like SecondThought being installed. I didn't reformat again. This time I went to safe mode again and deleted everything.
Now I get random pop-ups on Internet Explorer. The random pop-ups are blank, don't have a title, and sometimes say "Ad expired" in plain text. That is the first problem. I just want to get that fixed even though I may not be using IE anymore. I installed Mozilla and then a friend suggested Firefox so I'm going to try that. Second problem is more serious. When I startup my computer and it hits the XP user logon screen, a dialog window pops up and says the following: "Windows - System Error A duplicate name exists on the network." I have never seen this problem before and am wondering how I can fix this. Anyone know what to do? |

See this for the 'Duplicate Name' problem.
For the spyware, download and run Spybot: Search and Destroy and AdAware. |

A duplicate name means that there is another computer on your LAN that has the same machine name.
To change the computer's name: control panel > system properties > "computer name" tab > change As for the pop-ups, is the address about:blank?

Thanks for the help with the system error. I believe it is fixed now.
To clean spyware, I use the following: Spybot S&D, CWShredder, Ad-Aware 6 Professional, PestPatrol, Bazooka Spyware Scanner (Picks up spyware and then you manually remove it through regedit), and Hijack This! For the blank pop-ups, the title of it is just the following: " - Microsoft Internet Explorer" Nothing more, nothing less. |
