Question Blocking out viruses from email server

I have a dot us address for my email. I also have Norton/Symantec, however, everyday I get 20-30 infected emails which Symantec is able to block but it is becoming very annoying. The server tells me that this is quite normal, and even though they have the spam assassin feature enabled, the infected emails are getting through.

Is there another software I can buy that will eliminate this problem?

Do you have control over the server that you can install software on it?

No-- The host is ICDSoft--- I have no control whatseover, but I need to do something about it-- Yesterday I received two other email containing viruses-- w.32.netskyP@mm!enc ----- Also the day before I received about 8 emails with that same virus. Since Symantec could not intercept, I had to quarrantine---

I also spent several hours on the phone with symantec, we did a full system scan, and I am not infected, but they said that just because I did not open the attachment does not mean that I can not get infected---

The said that there's a software I can buy from their online store---

Any suggestions?

I don't use Norton and so I can't comment on anything they may have that might work.

I misunderstood your original question, there are programs that can be used on mail servers to block such things but that is up to the persons in charge of the server to handle that.

If you have up to date A-V signatures for your NAV then it should pick up anything that comes through provided you have the e-mail virus scanner enabled.

First off, make sure all Symantec software is updated DAILY in this situation.

Second, update using Intelligent updater as well as live update. Norton releases critical updates on Wednesdays. Intelligent updater can receive the daily updates on a daily basis instead of waiting until Wed. Go to Symantec Security Response website, click on downloads and then click on "download using intelligent updater only". It will give you instructions and they are very simple, just a few steps.

The real question here is WHY are you receiving all of these infected e-mails?

I had a similar problem last year but my e-mail address was published in a local newspaper. I eliminated this address, sent out a group mailing to all whom I wanted to have my new address and all infected e-mail ceased.

Hope this is of some help.

Hey Kev, thanks for your response. I don't know why I am getting all these infected emails. I am even getting them from me to me. I have sent many complaints to my hosting company, they say that's "normal" with any dot com address.

I have enabled Spam Assassin, however all the infected emails from server294, still get through. It seems that server has the most virus traffickers--

Yeah, the virus is often distributed from a spoofed e-mail address (yes, they can make it say it is from yourself or your best friend or what ever...). That was the first indication that I was having problems last year.

Beware of any suspicious-looking e-amil that has an attachment.

Lots of good reading at Symantec website. It really makes you understand how complex these things can be. Lots of good removal tools if you DO get a virus or trojan and plenty of stress on keeping up to date and patched no matter what O.S. you are using.

Read the latest article here from the mul on spyware and the release of the new Adaware SE. Another whole ballgame that spyware...
