Web Hosting

What are some good, cheap web hosting services that will allow me to use my own domain name. Also, where can I purchase a domain name?

I've had good luck with Ripple Host for cheap hosting plans. And I've registered all of my domains with GoDaddy without any problems.

Tanks for the suggestions. I have Frontpage as part of Office XP and I also have access to Dreamweaver. Would I be able to use either of those with Ripple Host? Also, how do Canaca and PowWeb look and can I use Dreamweaver with them?

The best place to check is the WebHostingTalk Forums. Just do a search for a specific company and you should find some comments on their services. And yes, Ripple Host supports FrontPage extensions if you wish to use those.

May I recommend Total Choice Hosting? Another member here recommended them and I have not been disappointed at all!

I registered my domain names with GoDaddy and have hosting with TCH. They have a TCH Family Forum where you can posts pre-sales questions, etc. and have them answered by the TCH staff and/or other family members.

TCH does support DreamWeaver & FrontPage extensions to answer the question in your previous post. If you have any additional questions, I'll answer them as best I can...

Here's a walk through on some of the things you need for a webpage/FTP/servers and such: http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.php?t=101452

I like Powweb a lot - it's a complete package, and I hear is a very nice deal with good bandwidth, cheap, and good support. I have friends on that server - they used to have WCIII.com, until they stopped paying for it...yes, they had their own Warcraft III server .

Just a quick question - does Dreamweaver boast an integrated FTP function - in other words, does it do it for you at a click of a button? Or do you need to use something like a standalone FTP product? If standalone, any server would do. I know that FrontPage has a built-in FTP, and servers will specifically mention whether they support it or not. Powweb has Frontpage support.

Hope that helps,
kram

Apache running on 'nix based servers uses Frontpage Extensions. Which are basically a way to overly complicate, reduce security and add quite a few MB's to your hosting plan. DW and other MM products have FTP support built-in where you can edit pages on a website. It doesn't require any kind of extensions or extra code. Basically you just save the file on the site and are done. I personally think that it is a bad idea to code on live site. It is better practice to code on a local server, work out all of the bugs and then upload. With plain HTML, this is not a huge issue unless you get a table out of wack and the page displays funny. But if you are doing some extensive programming with PHP or the like, it is very bad practice to code live.

I agree with mairving - although I've never coded live, I would never do it as I sometimes use PHP and MySQL databasing and such.
