Hey guys,
I do some work for a company that makes accessories for motorcycles. They just launched a new website and they are receiving complaints from AOL users that they can't see the jpeg images, etc. (NO AOL BASHING, THIS IS SERIOUS) However, AOL users can see the site fine if they use IE as their browser. The site is here: http://www.pro-one.com Does anyone know why this problem would happen?

Which pictures are you talking about? It looks like they used Fireworks to slice and dice images. It is also pretty heavily laden with Javascript. I looked at the page in Opera, IE 5.5, Mozilla and Netscape they all looked fine on the home page. On the catalog page there were no pictures.

Also some of the earlier versions of AOL really don't like jpeg images created in certain versions of Photoshop, probably Firworks also. You can try converting the images to gif's which means that you will lose some quality. It should display ok as a gif. I think that it has to do with AOL's use of compressed graphics.

mairving,
I can't give you specifics because I don't use AOL. The problem as I understand it as that they can't see the individual product photos. Go into "online Catalog", then choose Harley Davidson at the top, then go to "seats" at the left. You should see images of seats. Like I said, it works fine with IE or NS. It's only AOL that has some sort of a problem. I haven't used AOL in so many years that I don't even know what they use for a browser any more. |

The AOL Network Adapter is the binding between IE's script compiler and the AOL browser, among other things. It's never worked properly, and AOL isn't exactly making it a priority to work on it since they'd rather have you looking at keyword ads than other websites.
The site looked fine in Netscape 4.74 for me. The only solution I know of is to have a separate "AOL users click here" site that's straight HTML without the scripts and other "eye candy". Xayd |

I checked it out using AOL 6.0, and it definitely has problems with it. Sometimes it loads right, and sometimes it doesn't. If they have changed their settings to "Never compress graphics" in their browser setup, that makes things worse.

Here's the way I understand the problem AOL browsers have with JPG's. Originally, the JPG 'format standard' was what is now considered Baseline Standard. JPG later had an extension of this called Baseline Optimized. AOL browsers have no problems with these JPG formats. The problem is incurred with progressive scanned JPG's (Photoshop and Fireworks default to saving JPGs in this way). Progressive scanning offers the best compression and best color retention, but for some unknown reason, AOL browsers cannot deal with this new JPG format.
