web hosting

I to start my own website, I have tones of the free ones, ex, geocities, 100webspace, but I wanted to get my own domain name and such. But I didn't want to spend to much I wanted to support php, I was looking at the linux buisness hosting plan. And I was wondering if this is a good choice and if there are any other better ones that are around $12 or less a month and offer a database and php.

You can get quite a bit for $12 a month. I have used Hostmatters for quite a few years. While not necessarily as cheap as some, their support is great. There are plenty of good hosts and also plenty of bad ones around.

Check out Total Choice Hosting. They have very reasonable pricing for their plans and their support team is excellent!

You can register your domain through TCH or you can register it with GoDaddy for between $8-$10 depending on what type (.com/.net/etc.) of domain you want to purchase...

For $5 per month, www.hostvector.com is a great deal. I have used them for a little over a month now and have been extremely pleased with their service, support, uptime, etc. I am on the $5 plan, but it is the low cost solution with 15 MySQL and 15 PostgreSQL databases, 250 MB space, alot of bandwidth, CPanel, and unlimited email addresses. Here is a link to all their plans: http://www.hostvector.com/hosting_so...ed_hosting.htm

It looks like their $10.95 plan has 500 megs of space and 20 gig bandwidth with unlimited databases and alot more.

Hope this helps.

For the Hostvector does it include php or asp? And which do you think would be better, the 1and1 linux busieness package, the Total Choice Deluxe, or the Host Vector hv300. The main things I want is ftp accounts, php, a database, and hopefully a couple of free domains, and maybe asp or perl.

I'd stay away from 1&1 - they have to be the most annoying most ridiculously laid out webhosting package you will ever have seen. Take for example their ONLY database; using their web-admin tool it takes about 30 minutes to create a database and another 30 if you want to delete one and start afresh. About half a day in some situations to even get a subdomain added.

i presume its linux with php and mysql if it offers cpanel, MS servers with ASP tend to be in the more expensive price range with a cut down control panel. i dont have any recomendations as i dont know of any american hosts.

You don't need or want to get the domain name from your host. It is usually more expensive and some of the less scrupulous ones will register the domain in their name and if you decide to change hosts, hold the domain name for ransom and charge a fee to move it. Just go over to GoDaddy and register one yourself. Then once you decide on your host, go back over to GoDaddy and point the site by changing the nameservers over to the hosts nameservers.

Basically what you do is have to translate your domain_name.com to an IP address. So when you setup a site with a host, they will add you to their DNS (name servers) servers. This does the translation of IP address to domain name for you. You then have to tell your registar, GoDaddy, where your nameservers are. Once you tell them where your nameservers are in 24-48 hrs. all of the root DNS servers all over the world are updated so that they when they get a request for your_new_domain.com, they know to go to your host's nameservers. When it gets to your host's nameservers, they translate it into an IP address and send someone to your site. All done very quickly usually.

GREAT choice!

As mairving said, you can purchase your domain name from GoDaddy. Once you do that you will have an account with them. Log on to your account and you will see an option to 'Manage Domains'. Click on this and then you will see several other options.

Select 'Set Nameservers' and you will be able to change the servers for your domain name. The new nameserver information will be provided when you purchase your hosting from Total Choice. I've attached a couple of screenshots (sorry, had to put them in a zip file due to size) from the GoDaddy account page..hope they help.

If you have any questions about GoDaddy or Total Choice, feel free to ask...

Thats a very nice choice, and after i got to looking at their plans closer, it looks like LW has recruited me to his host too. I will keep an eye on them in the next 6 months to a year and see how they are doing. They are cheaper and offer more stuff than hostvector does, so I may likely go with them. If you need help setting up the domain name servers, feel free to IM, PM, or email me and I would be glad to help.

Glad you like what you see at TotalChoice KStateFan40!

I've been nothing but impressed since signing up with them and I'm sure that both you and willboy will not be disappointed...

I am also a happy customer from TotalChoice. I am so happy that I don't mind having a free, bolded, green link to them on my sig. But maybe I should get compensated for all the referrals they got. I think they should contribute 1 WU to PCMech's F@H team for every new member I bring in. Well as long as they continue to provide excellent plans, outstanding customer relations, reliable service, and dirt-cheap pricing, I am happy.

I too have the silver package from them. I started back then before they upgraded (doubled) their packages. I would have signed up for their basic plan since I only use my account for personal email and some ftp. I would have used the $11 for some rounded cables
