Well cable does have a little bit of seniority over DSL. The main problem with DSL is that it is not as available in as many areas.

When I started out with cable, I was rocking around at about 2800 kbps. Now I am lucky to get 500. That is the problem with cable that you don't really have with DSL. A lot of it does depend on the provider. If I had a choice I would probably now go with DSL. Unfortunately I don't have a choice.

It really depends on the provider. I am on cable, when I connect to a good server, I get downloads and uploads of 150 to 180k/sec. With DSL in my area, it's about 120K/sec download, 9k/sec upload. Pricing is the same so that isn't an issue. Cable in my area seems to be more stable as well. Cable is supposed to bog down with more users, but for some reason in my area, DSL is really slow from about 5PM to midnight while I don't notice any difference with cable. Find some users in your area and see what kind of results they are getting. It's the only fair comparison.

And with DSL, if it turns out to be your best option, there's also the installation time to be considered. This stuff works over existing phone lines, so if yours have been rusted away at the box, chewed on by the dog, cut and spliced when someone dug a hole in the wrong place, etc., then you may have to have line work done to troubleshoot the problems you'll have. That sometimes takes months.

Cable on the other hand is very simple to install and get working.

I have DSL and love it, it's much faster and more consistent than cable is here, but it took me almost three months to get it .

I'd suggest the reviews/forums at http://www.dslreports.com
