Hello everyone,
I was just wondering about download speeds. My friend has a 333 MHz computer and a 56k modem and his average download speeds are around 7-10 kbs. My computer is a 900 MHz computer also with a 56k modem and my average download speeds are around 0.2-2 kbs. This is a huge difference in download speeds, I wanna know what could possibly be the problem with my modem or something? Could it be the internet service provider? I have MSN internet and I think he has either jps.net or Big Vally internet. Plz post if you have any ideas, I wanna get faster download speeds. P.S- We both use download accelerator but that doesn't help me. Thanx in advance! |

there is no relationship between cpu speed and download speed. The download speed is only capped by the kind of modem you have and line quality.
In your case I can only see 2 options. - You have an extremely bad line (call phone company) - There is something wrong with the drivers of your modem (update them to the latest version) |

1. Get RID of the download accelerator.
2. What is your modem brand and type? 3. What is your indicated initial connect speed? 4. What is your operating system? |

Hey.....I happen to like Download Accelerator.
Best of the bunch of resumable download managers. My thought is 1) Winmodem needs some tweeks. 2) Line might be crappy. 3) Unbranded winmodem is the major cuprit. Try getting a copy of Modem Wizard4.5 -- did a great job on my dial up and my dsl connection. -Craig |

If its a cheap winmodem connecting at 50666 and your throughput sucks, its connecting too fast for your phone line. We need to know EXACTLY what it is before we can recommend anything (Lucent LT? Conexant HCF? Conexant Soft56? PCTel HSP?). Is this a name brand (HP, Compaq, etc.) computer or a clone?
Get RID of the download accelerator and any other 3rd party "enhancers" at least till this is sorted out. [Edited by glc on 03-29-2001 at 01:22 AM] |

That's most likely the problem right there. AMR modems can work well sometimes/sometimes not. When we sold them, our cost on them was about $9.00CDN. Where I live, if you're in the city, they work great. Go 5 miles outside the city limits, you show a good connect speed, but the performance sucks at best. Get yourself a good PCI hardware modem or a serial port modem.
