GMail "you've got mail" notifier

Quote:
There are a TON of you guys out there that use Gmail, thanks to that handy dandy referral system, so I thought I should point out this downloadable Gmail Notifier. The program sits in your system tray and lets you know when you have mail, who it is from and other good stuff.

The Gmail Notifier is a downloadable Windows application that alerts you when you have new Gmail messages. It displays an icon in your system tray to let you know if you have unread Gmail messages, and shows you their subjects, senders and snippets, all without your having to open a web browser.
You can get it here: http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/

PLEASE, do not talk about where you can get invitations in this thread.

What's up with this anyway?

Ok, so what's up with G-mail anyway? What makes it so much better than anything else? I know people who use it, but it just seems to me like exactly the same as Hotmail, or Webmail... or anything else.

EDIT: I have an invitation from a friend, but still no idea why it's better... thanks.

I wouldnt say its better but more of supply and demand.... there is a lack of supply so there is more of a demand for it.... I want it becuase I cant have it... I know I would never use 1 Gig of space.

gmail is wanted because it offers a huge amount of space over hotmail (2 MB compared to gmail's 1 gb)

however now there are some alternatives with that much space.

i have been using www.walla.com too and its been awesome (they give 1 gb space, pretty much no ads), way better then hotmail and maybe better then gmail.

i have a gmail account and i love it. i use this notifier as well, and this makes it so nice. i guess i like the searching capabilites, and the amount of space i have. i am slowly trying to migrate everything over to gmail as much as possible. i guess i haven't really described what makes it so much better, and truthfully, i don't know, but i know i love it. the whole thread thing is great too, for reading longer emails
