Fiber Optics

"A technology that uses glass (or plastic) threads (fibers) to transmit data. A fiber optic cable consists of a bundle of glass threads, each of which is capable of transmitting messages modulated onto light waves.

Fiber optics has several advantages over traditional metal communications lines:

Fiber optic cables have a much greater bandwidth than metal cables. This means that they can carry more data.
Fiber optic cables are less susceptible than metal cables to interference.

Fiber optic cables are much thinner and lighter than metal wires.

Data can be transmitted digitally (the natural form for computer data) rather than analogically.

The main disadvantage of fiber optics is that the cables are expensive to install. In addition, they are more fragile than wire and are difficult to split.

Fiber optics is a particularly popular technology for local-area networks. In addition, telephone companies are steadily replacing traditional telephone lines with fiber optic cables. In the future, almost all communications will employ fiber optics."

In other words, you can't exactly pick up the phone and order it for your home. (Yet.)

I use ADSL and it's workin fine enough for me sharing it with three laptops. It's a heck of a lot faster than ole' 56k. But really - you should check your local phone company to see if they offer anything - I use the internet service from Cincinnati Bell, and along with ADSL, they offer T1 services which is...fast. Very fast.

That service looks almost exclusively for Mason County...in Washington.

Fiber is probably no faster in this case than regular old copper, it just sounds faster. Fiber certainly has less signal loss but you need to see what the download and upload speeds something that was intentionally left off of the site that HiHo referenced.

Not necessarily. There are always faster connections, but as for residential computer user, Cable is probably all you'll need. I use T1 at school and man, it's fast...more than ever necessary (800+ kb/s downloads ). I'd say Comcast Cable's pretty reputable and a good bet.

T1 is slower on the download side 1.5Mbps vs. most cable now at 3Mbps but it is faster on the upload since cable uploads are usually capped at 256K where T1 goes the full 1.5M. Most people could care less about the upload. It also depends greatly upon the number of users on T1 and on cable and what they are doing.

Thanks kram, one more question, I remeber a program called Gozilla that helped manage your downloads and if you got disconnected you could start from where you left off, do you know any good programs like that. Also do you know any good programs that will speed up my comcast internet even more?

The speeds aren't on there because it is unlimited and completely uncapped. I am freinds with the owner of the company and he says it is lighting fast. I have cable internet from HCTC and the speeds are uncapped. Last I checked I get 5.6 MB/s down and 1.7 MB/s up. They don't charge extra for more speed. That's the way it should be everywhere.

Well I don't think he'll go national. Actually I hope he doesn't because it's a given that service and support would suffer. As it is now I can literally walk down to the main office and ask a question. There is no holding on the phone either.
