tcp/ip dissapears on win2k

anyone with any idea how to fix this?

i am running win2k sp4, and i have lost all network connection. i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling network adapters, to no solution. finally in desperation, i booted with 'directory services restore mode' to find everything came back:
dchp alert..tcp/ip has changed from 0.0.0.0.0 to 172.16.... i could connect to internet then, but can't reconcile the directories to get everything to work in normal boot mode.
am i missing something simple?
do i need to reformat and reinstall win2k?

please help
