IE6 does not open

Hi everyone,

I have an old pc that is an AMD K6/2. Motherboard is unknown. The problem I am having is when you click on IE6 you get an hour glass but then it goes away and IE6 never opens. This happens from the start/programs area as well. The computer had a virus called JS/Noclose but it was deleted by my new McAfee Virusscan. It also had four spyware programs that were deleted by the new software. I have tried to uninstall IE6 and switch to IE5.01 as I have heard that IE6 does not work well with windows98. When I tried to do this I get an error message stating that there is a update that is in progress and I need to shutdown the system and reboot before I can uninstall IE6. I reboot and I still get the same Error message when I try to uninstall. I am stumped...please help. Thanks.

Have you considered NOT using Idiot Exploiter?
That's probably where all that crap came from in the first place!

Unless you desperately need IE, may I suggest using an alternative web browser such as Mozilla Firefox? I have both IE and Firefox loaded on my machines with no problems. Firefox tends to have a smaller footprint than IE, so on machines with fewer system resources, you won't have as many problems. Plus, it's more secure than IE.

IMHO, I'd switch to Firefox.

The only thing that I can think of that would cause IE not to open is possibly a corrupt file. If you have the original Win98 cd's, you should be able to reinstall IE. The version on the CD's will be the earlier version and hopefully that should take care of it.

Thanks for the advice, I may try the other browsers, although I would like to fix the problem first. I tried to install windows 98se over the existing windows 98se and that worked fine, but the problem still is present.

I have had nothing but problems with IE6 and 98, have you tried rolling back to a previous version, go to add remove programs, and select IE, then Remove. It will not remove it, only roll back to a previous version.

Yup, I have tried to roll back the version of IE6 but it says there is an update that requires a reboot, reboot and try again. I reboot and get the same error message. I also get other random windows error messages at seemingly random times. I get "windows has performed an illegal function" type of warning, can't remember what they all were (seems as though they were different windows errors each time). I did write one down, it said "winrhr32" at the top of the warning. Not sure if that helps anyone...
