email question

I have a client attending Michigan State Univ. She would like to access her email that was set up at home on her parents' Charter Cable account. They use Outlook at home but when she tries to run Outlook at MSU she gets an error message that the server is not available. I know some university security systems block some sites. Is this the possible reason for her not being able to access the account? Not sure if I can offer a solution or just direct her to the campus IT group.

Is there some type of web based email client that she could use...see if that works, though I would doubt MSU would restrict access to the ISP's server. Make sure all the acct settings, such as "Authentication required by ISP" is turned on or off accordingly.

Most would block POP email going out since it would be an easy way to bypass the virus scanner on the network. She should be able to check it via webmail.

Thanx for the replys, guys. She and her family are unaware of the web site that provides the email service so I suggested she contact the MSU IT department for a solution. Hopefully they can help provide a solution.

If it is Charter here in MI, she can go to http://charter.com/ and click the "check my email" link. Just sign in with her email and pass.

Not as many options as Outlook, but I use webmail for my Comcast account when I'm at work. Good enough to read and send when there but I agree, if I was there for the whole school year I would want to figure out the problem also.

edit: I said "here in MI" but I guess it would work from any Charter account.

perhaps the server address is not fully qualified?

at home when connected to charter "mail" would work fine, but when elsewhere it would need to be "mail.charter.net" or whatever the actual POP3 server address was.
