BitTorrent in XP Causes Internet to Crash

Hi!

I use Windows XP with SP2.

I seem to have a problem with BitTorrent. One that I did not have on my Windows 98 PC.

BitTorrent seems to download slow (if at all) and takes down my entire Internet network when left on. I have my ports forwarded on my router and have moved my computer into the DMZ. Additionally I have checked for the latest drivers for my ethernet (its connected to my motherboard) and I believe I already have them.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

It could be an SP2 issue.

It is...

sp2 limits the number of connections that you have have on one port, the limit is 10. Programs like bitTorrent use, i believe, 100 connections per port so thats the reason your having this problem. There are work arounds to this like patching tcpip.sys. If you dont like patching or messing with files I wouldnt bother but If you feel your a POWER USER and can get yourself out of a jam I would say go for it. I'm sure you can find a patch using google.

Microsoft has a winning trend of upgrade, where their definition seems to be 'feature reduction'. Less is more works for feng shui I suppose...

I used BitTorrent on XP Home SP 2 for months and it worked fine, I just got XP Pro on here and haven't tested it.. The problem with slow downloads is you might not have ports opened.

It is not an SP2 feature. I suffer it aswell in win98SE.
The problem happens when you are surfing at the same time than the client finishes a download. I suffered it it several clients but Azureus. TRY IT! It seems than since Azureus is Java based the virtual machine absorbs whatever problem it has.

Maybe try allocating different ports to BT in your router's config, and then in the BT client's options.

I have my ports forwarded.

I use Azuerues. Even though with other clients this problem still occurs.

Did a little Googling on the net for this problem. From the looks of it this seems like an SP2 issue. Alot of other people have it.

I think I might have to wait it out until someone comes up with a proper patch.

yup! I got this problem too from the past months. The torrents freezes the connection and cause other program to slow down. Whenever it happens all the downloads go down to zero and I had to either restart or wait a few minutes for it pick back up again.

Strange...What client were you using again? Azureus isn't my favorite client, I wasn't satisfied with the speeds I was getting, but if it works stay with it. If you haven't patched your TCPip.sys file to have unlimited connections in SP2, your still not getting the speeds you should see in BT, and theres a very noticable difference in eMule. Even tho it seems like its running flawlessly, look in event manager and you should see something about limits being exceeded.

drac,
What are your system specs?
How much hard drive space is left?
What is the size of the torrent file ( im assuming its a game being around 1-2GB)?
Whats your hard drive file type, eh like FAT32, NTFS, FAT

hey GhostRec, I'm trying to use Azureus now to see if it has the same problem as the Bittornado. I got a 2.6 gighz, 700 mgbyte ram, and i have little space left about 2 gigs. The files i ussually download are around1.5gigs. About the Azureus can you make a multiple incoming TCP listen ports? In the Bittornado, you can specify like ports 6881-6889 but in Azureus I can only use one ports. Thanks alot.

OK, this is getting so annoying. Whenever I use bittorent it freezes the whole connection after 10 mins. I've changed the network card and I know it's not the router because it still cause the same problem whenever i don't use the router. Anybody knows how to fix this problem? Whenever it freezes I have to wait like 15 mins for the connection to work again.

Thanks and appreciate it.

Try forwarding 6881-6999 I believe thats the full range. Other than that it might be as simple a problem connecting to the tracker or peers. Get rid of Azureus, might make life a lot easier.
