Internet connection problem--virus related?
I wasn't sure exactly where to post this, but considering that the main problem I'm having is with the internet and not the virus, I thought I'd post it here.
While I was searching my C: drive for a file, I stumbled upon an executable named dload.exe. Not knowing what it was, I clicked on it. I saw a quick progress bar flash across the screen and then everything was as it used to be. However I found out minutes later (after I had installed NAV) that there were infected files on my computer, one of which was named savenow.exe (I had installed NAV after I clicked on dload.exe and before I saw the infected files). So I got rid of the infected files with NAV--but I find later that savenow.exe is still there. I checked the directory in which savenow was located and I couldn't delete it. When I went back again later I found that the file was gone (I presumed that NAV took care of it). So that was that, and I passed no heed of it. Keep in mind that I was able to do the norton liveupdate with no problem beforehand. Later, when I restart my computer, I discover that I can no longer connect to the internet. Fearing that NAV was causing some trouble, I uninstalled it. No dice. I still can't connect. I've been fiddling around with my internet connections for hours now, and I have no idea what to do or how to connect to the internet again. Any ideas? |

Here's one of many viruses that use the savemnow file:
W32.HLLP.Spreda.B http://securityresponse.symantec.com....spreda.b.html Can go here and search for the exact name of the virus that Norton reported: http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/vinfodb.html |

I checked that stuff but my internet connection still isn't working, which is why I think my internet connection has been fundamentally corrupted or damaged somehow--although I can't fathom how that might have occured.
Are any of those viruses known to effect one's connection to the internet? |

What was the name of the virus you removed and what were the files removed? |

All I did was delete the savenow.exe file (I don't know what it did--if anything at all--to my computer) and I erased it from the registry like it suggested on the symantec site. I am presuming that this has something to do with the fact that my internet isn't working, unless norton disrupts the connection with a firewall or something.

Hey Queens, Grew up in Astoria myself. How are you connected to the internet? Is the NAV just a virus software or is it the complete system with firewall. Depending on how you are set up you may have to make sure all your firewalls settings are OK, and check the windows firewall also if you are running XP. I keep windows firewall off and just use Kerio, because the windows firewall disrupts my wireless connection.

NAV, as of now, is uninstalled. The internet still isn't working. I'm thinking that the virus somehow corrupted the registry of IE. But would IE open at all then without some sort of error? Because it's opening up fine, just without connecting to the internet. What else could it be that's disrupting my internet connection if my browser itself is ok? Is there anyway to fix it, whatever it may be?

Your browser and internet connection are different systems in the computer. Your connection could be corrupted, or knock out, but the browser would work just find, except when the window opened you would see a message saying that you could not connect to the internet or your home page. Have you check your internet connections to see that they haven't changed? Is your IP address still the same? Try setting up a new connection and see if it helps.
