Deleted RealPlayer and installed Winamp. Radio stations now will not play and are calling for Real Player.
Cannot find any Option/preferences setting on Winamp that would set it as default. Or is it that some stations are locked into Real Player useage, and/or Winamp only good for MP3/Wav and not radio? Thanks. |

Winamp is not capable of playing .rm or .ra files.

Not sure...I always thought winamp only played cd's mp3's .wav and other files, but not radio stations, I could be wrong though. Even if it doesn't maybe there's a plugin available somewhere on the winamp website.

Winamp is compatable with Live365.com streaming radio -- I should know, I work for them. We don't suggest using Winamp for our streaming radiostations due to latency issues. But it will work (and work well for any broadband connection -- 56K and lower is the problem child).
There are plenty of other streaming radio stations out there -- most using real media as their stream of choice. Winamp will not work in that situation. -Craig |

Winamp will play all realplayers streaming audio, you have to ascertain the url and key it into the url field in winamp and it should start buffering and it will stream the radio station. Where you make winamp the default for realplayer stations i dont know. In fact i have the reverse problem to you as i have at some stage nominated winamp as the default player for realplayer stations, now when i hit a livefeed link up pops winamp. I find winamp inferior to realplayer for streaming audio sound quality. Windows media player however, seems to utilise the better compression techniques than either winamp or real player. Incidentally, you can also paste the url of media player and stream them through winamp too. There is a special trick to doing this,i was advised it, after having posted the question on the winamp forum.
My suggestion is, if you're looking for the best sound quality stick to the two players. perhaps one day i'll find a player that will play both formats with the audio quality of media player plus a built in equalizer. Winamp nearly does that. I dont ask a great deal do i? [Edited by philmerrin on 04-07-2001 at 11:27 AM] |

Thanks for the help. I wanted to get rid of Real Player because it was always in my face. I uninstalled it and did a custom reinstallation deleting many of the offensive options. When I get a chance I'll go to the Winamp site and get some info.
