McAfee might have messed up internet access....

I was looking at a computer (Dell 8300, winXP sp2, 256ram, P4) last night and we got a meesage from McAfee that an object wanted to access the internet and use port 135, so I blocked it and completed the boot. When we tried to go on the 'net we got page not found, so I went into McAfee and unblocked the problem child, rebooted and tried again, same result. I ran WinsockXPfix, which allowed me to see network addresses in TCP/IP (all 0's b/4), but we still can't get on the internet. The connection is good (cable) and another computer on the network can get to the internet with no problem.

I ran Adaware 6.181, Spybot 1.3, and CWShredder, and fixed what showed. Hijack this! shows nothing obvious that is active.

Anybody got any suggestions or hints about possible fixes?

TIA,

rgdiz

1. Ad-Aware 6.x is no longer current and supported. Ad-Aware SE 1.05 is the current app.

2. You have scanned for spyware, but you also need to scan for viruses and Trojans.

3. I'd advise you to uninstall McAfee. Their software often causes more problems than it claims to prevent/fix.

4. Check your hosts file for unwanted redirects and flush your DNS cache.

c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts (with NO extension, open it in Wordpad), the only active entry should be 127.0.0.1 pointing to localhost.

At a command prompt - IPCONFIG /FLUSHDNS

More and Thanks.....

I'll run AA 1.05 and flush DNS, but we tried to run the computer as a new/different user and had the same result, but, when we run in safe mode with network we can get to the internet. Has anyone else run into this?

As for McAfee and Norton SW I agree, (but the box isn't mine, so I'll try to convince the owner to uninstall) they cause more problems than they cure, I'll take Sygate and AVG for free everytime.

Thanks Again,
