I am trying to help a friend with his PC

Is he on dial-up? Thats what im guessing if you say he has a modem. Back when I had dial-up i got disconnected every time someone tried to call me, something about call waiting. But if its every 5 minutes then I doubt its that. First thing is to scan for viruses and spyware, some will do that to a computer. Then make sure you have the latest drivers for the modem and that its properly installed. It could also be a problem with the modem itself, try to put it in another computer or put another modem in your computer if you can just to see if the problem is with the modem or not.
