Hotmail with Mozilla Thunderbird

Hi,
Anyone have an idea on how to configure Mozilla Thunderbird to work with my hotmail accout? I'm kinda stuck with the POP3 and SMTP stuff. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
~sd

I do not believe Hotmail has a POP server or an SMTP server...most free services generally don't.

Could you ask your brother how he did it? That might give you a basis for where to starts your search at least.

No can do. Hotmail is strictly Web-based. It can be hooked into Outlook ONLY if you upgrade to a pay account.

not stricktly true.. on outlook express goto tools>accounts>mail>add>mail> then when you get to 'email address' just put in youraddress@hotmail.com in the box and it fully integrates with O/E. and i have never paid for any hotmail accounts.
i could also get my hotmail using eprompter.. there may be some kind of plugin for thunderbird which spoofs hotmail into thinking it is outlook express? not that i know of any myself.

mb, I am reading posts elsewhere that M$ has recently stopped the ability to use Outlook/OE and 3rd party POP checkers with free Hotmail, they now require a pay account. This has been done to try to stop spammers from using Hotmail free accounts to do their mass mailings. Perhaps this only applies to new accounts.

I can still access my free Hotmail account through Outlook. I don't normally use it that way but I could.

According to that article, by the end of the year, you won't be able to any more.

http://bhttpmail.sourceforge.net/

http://freepops.sourceforge.net/en/

With Yahoo i'ts quite easy. sign up at yahoo.ca not yahoo.com, you can still put in your own country and then you can have free forwarding and free POP, one or the other. Also before Yahoo upgraded to 100mb, you could get 6mb if you signed up at yahoo.ca rather 4mb at yahoo.com.

sign up at the chinese side and get 60Gb space..... j/k

but who knows? until u try.

51, all those poppers are not going to work any more on free accounts. I would recommend that ANYONE wishing to add further comments read that article that aym_7 has linked to first. You want to use WebDAV with Hotmail, you are going to have to pay.

I should have posted a quote

Quote:
But as of Monday, news users wanting to make use of WebDAV will have to pay for the service, said Brooke Richardson, product manager for MSN's communications services. MSN plans to transition current WebDAV users to subscription plans in the next few months as well.
WebDAV is the protocol used by Outlook to retrieve messages from Hotmail.

Smile Hotmail with Mozilla Thunderbird

In order to resolve this problem set your browser to the following web address and all will be revealed : http://2mod2.com/mohot/

Download the instructions and the software, making sure that you are running the Sun Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2.05 or better (also available for free download).

Install the software carefully following the instructions, including the upgrade procedure, and this solution will work perfectly. I have applied this solution to two PCs running WinXP Pro (Service Pack 2) and it has worked flawlessly.

Good Luck,
