Does anyone have any registry or other hacks for Netscape. What we are trying to do is disable some of the menu items so that we can have a little more control over what users can do with Netscape. We would like to disable saving, file open from within NS, set as wallpaper etc.
Any suggestions or pointers would be appreciated.

In order from the simplest to the craziest workaround :)
I've gone through the same issues with our systems, albeit on a version of Nutscape prior to any current one. So I can only tell u from experience with the past.
I'd used it after reading about security advisories of these probs and I dont have the URLs. Wallpapers: Disabling wallpapers using netscape is simpler. Create a zero file or copy the existing file to a new file called Netscape Wallpaper.bmp in your Saving/Opening files: User a resource editor like Borland and open up resdll.dll from within Netscape. Delete out or hide whatever menu items you dont like. |

Alright Statica, I think I need a little more light on this one. We have a resource editor and have made the requested menu items inactive, wasn't sure which menu number so we did them all. All went well except that it didn't modify the dll, should I have "saved as" and then copied in place of the original?

Hey Mike .. which resource editor are u using?
I'd recommend, http://rpi.net.au/~ajohnson/resourcehacker/ Resource Hacker. Basically everytime you make a corection to a line or a module, you need to recompile it, it doesnt save it, just recompiles it. Then save it. It will automatically save your original with a *_original.* name. and your new one takes the place of the old. HTH |

Hey Statica any other thoughts, I have made inactive all the "preferences", "Saves" and "Save As" and they still show up even after recompiling. Is there a main dll or something for NS, I scoured the NS site and found nothing.

Hmm I dont know any more for Save and Save As .. what version were you working with? I had done it with Netscape 4.08, been a while.
Did the file open/browsing directories work? I have an alternate solution that I got to work with the same version if you are interested. Post here / PM me / mail. Cheers |
