Question Starting a website

Hi everybody

a friend of mine needs help starting a website. She is an artist. she paints on old windows and then sells them.

I basically want to know wherre I should start helping her and some tips and so on.
She just wants a place to upload photos of her art and maybe add text like "available/ unavailable" and so on

This is what I have listed to do:

1-purchase domain name
2- purchase webspace

Then what I do need to do?

I have a good knowledge of HTML and using the internet/computer.

If worse comes to worst, maybe ill set her up with an online gallery account like pbase.com

So it would be pbase.com/corruptedsanity << my gallery

But i think she would rather have her own website and fairly easy "user friendly" software to update it herlself later on after I get her going.

Hope this was enough info!

thanks

For hosting, I've had good luck at Page-Zone. Siteflip is another option. I registered my domain name through GoDaddy, and I have had no problems, although some people have. If you want better reliability, you can go with Register.com. A good program for the gallery would be Gallery, a PHP based program.

Definitely go with GoDaddy for the domain. They are the cheapest I've found, and they can also host your site for you.

Hope that helps

Surpass Hosting Has been the best host thus far. They offer AWESOME deals. Plus, they offer an entire collection of scripts for photogalleries and other things.

Look into using Macromedia Dreamweaver for creating her site - then set her up with Macromedia Contribute to keep it updated.

By the way, I find it insulting the way you mentioned her age. That has nothing to do with understanding technology.

thats too bad for you if you find it insulting, you must have some issues with age and technology i guess. Th reason I mentioned her age was to clarify. There is a difference between an 18 yr old who isnt pc savvy and a 38 yr old who isnt pc savvy. The prior has probably been exposed to computers more than the latter. And yes AGE does have alot to do with understanding technology. I will find it easier to explain to my sister how RAM works, where as it would probably take more effort to explain it to my dad who has very very little experience with computers.

That's got to be some of the most assinine statements I've heard in a while! Age has nothing to do with it - my 80 year old mother knows more about the computer than my 45 year old sister, my 42 year old brother, etc. because she's interested in learning about it. My nieces & nephews, in their early 20's, contact me for help (I'm 40).

Anyway, if you have access to Dreamweaver/Contribute, like glc said, that's probably the best way to go.
