I am looking for a program out there (preferably free) that I can follow the history of my kids on the internet. They found the clear history button and now I have no way to track thei moves. Any program out there? Thanks

dont know, but you can go to http://www.download.com and search to see if they got what you're looking for.. If not there is an alternative, you may install Window 2000 Professional or NT, you have the total control of the mentioned OSes, I think. Good luck to your search.

You can always get Net Nanny or Surfwatch to make sure your kids can't access any adult content, although there are other ways to access such things and sometimes programs such as netnanny don't have certain sites blocked. I'd watch out for your kids using peer-to-peer programs like direct connect. Also erasing your history doesn't completely erase the history though. It's stored in a number of different places. Go to the windows directory and click on the Temporary Internet Folder and you'll see a list of all accessed sites stored in the sytem cache (usually the most recent). If you have Internet explorer 5.x or greater, you can enter 'www.' or 'http://www.' and it will attempt to finish the url by inserting the url of the most recent accessed site. Kids are smart about accessing adult material (I know from experience), so it's a good idea as a parent to learn as much as possible about computers and the internet so you can rival your kids. If you can't then there is always going to be a way for your kids to get around your supervision. Like c-learner said you can get Win NT, 2000 and create a System Administrator login, logged in as the system administrator you can control the levels of access your kids have. You can control what they download, what programs they are allowed to run, and what files they can access. If they are unable to access the history file then they won't be able to erase the history, as long as they don't have utillities as Server Salamandor or History Kill. Watch out for both those utillities.
*Whew* - never thought I'd help out a parent. Also - don't be like my mom and kick them off their computer for weeks and weeks and weeks etc. at a time, try to learn how to safeguard your computer; it's a more longterm solution. [Edited by MITotaku on 04-24-2001 at 09:12 PM] |

Don't spy on your kids. You'll lose their trust. If they won't get it on the internet they'll get it somwhere else. Trust and Listen.

You could always follow their progress by My Computer>C: Drive>
Windows>History folder and Double click on the day that you want. Net Watcher is also good for safe Net Surfing. It also comes with Windows 95,98. To install go to Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs, Windows Setup and System Tools. Click on the check box to install.

But that's the problem Nick, they're erasing the data in the history folder.

Net Watcher is good for these sorts of things.
Also you can configure Windows for different users Duane

Are you sure?
Do you mean Net Watcher as in the NETWORK administration tool that's included with Windows which can only be used to see which files are being used by another machine on your local network?
Or do you mean some other program, because I'm not aware of Windows Net Watcher (Programs - Accessories - Net Watcher) being able to set up Windows for different users or track what your kids are going on on the internet Jim PS. Why is this thread in the PROGRAMMING forum?

I dunno why it's here. Some lady must've got it confused with program-software... not program-make software. I'm surprised it hasn't been relocated to General Discussion, because basically only a handful of people post here. And it would better help her if people (more inclined with safeguarding their computer) could answer her.
I had this great IDEA for an anime forum and posted it in the THINK TANK and it got relocated to the General Discussion the next day (along with some smartmouth comment). |

It's still here because I haven't moved it yet =] Will be moved after this post to Internet/WWW
And Think Tank is not really for forum suggestions (gen discussion is for that sort of thing) -- Think Tank is more about things like robotics, or other new and innovative technical projects. In fact, the only place any non-technical idea belongs would be Gen Discussion, and even there tech is preferred if not required. Moving the thread to Internet/WWW.
