Can't access IE, missing file??

A friend just called me and wanted to know why he keeps getting a file missing error when he tries to go on line. His ISP is Adelphia cable. He couldn't remember the missing file, only that it's a Microsoft Office 2000 Pro file. When he cliks on IE he gets the error message that he's missing a Microsoft Office 2000 Pro file and it won't start. He can do anything else. He has XP home with SP2 installed. I wasn't aware that IE used any files from Microsoft Office.

Send a message via MSN to mikezel
See if you can get the exact name of the file and then run a Google search on it. That's what i do whenever i get specific file errors and most of the time you can get a very quick solution.

When someone calls me and tells me something like that, I tell them to call me back when they can read me the exact error message, word for word.

With the information you have provided and ONLY that information, I would say that you need to reinstall Office 2000 Professional. Make sense?

That's all true, but why would connecting to the net through a cable con have anything to do with office? He did call me and tell me the error # but said he searched the file and it is in the office folder. I'll see him tonight at our jam session and talk to him some more. Thanks, smitty

He probably deleted a system file by mistake. The easiest way to fix it would be to just reintall Office.

IE is tightly integrated with the operating system - it wouldn't surprise me if Office had some integration too. It's pretty easy to run a repair reinstall of Office, only takes a few minutes. There also may be an issue with service packs - XP SP2 may require the latest service pack for Office 2000, which I believe is SP3.

As said, if you can post the exact error message, it would be very helpful. Just because the file is present doesn't mean that it's the right version or properly registered.
