It takes my PC a long time to load a page from the internet. Why is that so? What can I do to speed things
up? I appreciate your help. Thank you. |

An n number of factors could contribute to the slowdown, the most significant ones being your ISP being slow, your modem being slow, noisy fone lines, the server that you are trying to connect to being slow, your HDD having errors, your OS having errors, your browser misconfigured, your proxyserver being misconfigured, your DNS information being misconfigured, your ISP's proxy/cache server being misconfigured, your ISP's DNS servers going down, intermediary node being down, hackers ....
You need to specify more information to get better results for your query. |

Thank you Static. Modem is showing 53333 bps. Would you suggest changing anything in my internet connection settings?
Thank you. |

That's a great connect speed, but at that speed, you probably have huge numbers of errors in data transfer, forcing packets to be resent, probably more than once, thus the pages load extremely slow.
This may sound funny, but slow the modem down, and increase your browsing speed. It's all about throughput. Read a little more here: http://www.pcmech.com/showdoc/112/ What kind of modem is it? What chipset? We'll get you on at a good speed that will actually improve the thing. |

If you can afford to pay $40 a month you can get cable(depending on location). Although once you experiance it you may not want to go back.
1. Less time spent on the computer (worth it right there I think) 2. really don't care for the other reasons |

Thank you Reboot. I use SM 56 PCI Speakerphone Internal Motorola modem through port CO3. I don't know what chipset is, and don't know how to get it.
I also don't know how to slow my modem down or how to increase my browsing speed. I appreciate your using simple terms that I can understand and thank you for your help. |

The best way to speed things up is toss that SM56 and get a good hardware controlled external serial modem such as a Supra Express or US Robotics Sportster.
Speed limiter extra settings for the SM56 are at http://808hi.com/56k/x2-linklimit.htm#motorola . You put the "extra setting" in the modem properties - advanced. Try %B45 first, to limit it to 49333 - and see what happens. |
