Firewall Questions (BitTorrent)
I use BitTornado to download torrent files and I always have the YELLOW light on there, which indicates I am behind a firewall and no one can connect to me. Can anyone help me fix this problem? I know I have to open up ports, I just don't know which ones and how to do it. Thanks for any help.

What brand/model of router do you have and what type of ISP are you on and what OS?

I have a Netgear RP614 router. I use a cable ISP, RoadRunner or Windows XP Pro.

That will take you too a page to DL the manual. What you want to do is find out what ports the Bit Torrent app needs open. Then read the manual section on ports. You will also need to verify your XP fire is disabled. You don't need 2 firewalls. If you have any troubles with understanding the manual post back with pacific questions and we will try to help. |

Ok while I try to figure stuff out, could the firewill be limiting and not giving me good FTP speeds? Also, how do I check if WinXP firewall is on?

Most likely not. Chances are you are only limited by your ISP.
The XP firewall settings are in the control panel under Network I believe. |

Make sure that you have the right ports forwarded in your router, and that you have set those same ports to be used by your BT client (should be somewhere in the options).

You might want to try alternative ports, in case your ISP has started traffic shaping on standard p2p ports. Also, make sure that there are many people on the torrent, because the yellow light doesn't mean you are behind a firewall (although it can show connectivity issues arising from improper firewall/router configurations), it means that the only connections you have were initiated by someone else.

BT is fast, but don't expect something as fast as fownloading from FTP.
I think the order of fast to slow connection are like this: DCC(mirc)>FTP>HTTP>BT. So whatever it is, BT is the slowest. And to maximize your connection, make sure the file is popular enough to have seeders and peers in the 1000s. But advisable connecting to less than that per torrent. You can limit this. A lot of connection will/can slow you down. And only opening one connection at a time(But some testing and knowing your max dl/up speed will help alot). Sometimes one connection is not as good. I open 4 connections, unlimited dl, up 30K for my 1mb line. I am not sure how high I should open the up speed. If the up speed is too high, the dl speed will suffer. And leaving max how many up/dl connections at a time per torrent. This will help. And I have not used Bitornado, but using Azureus. Depends on user. I find Azureus has the most customizable options and making seeding easy. HTH

you do not need any extra firewalls when you are useing a router.
the router is a hardware firewall. and a very good one. |

Since when was DCC'ing fast? DCC should be at the bottom of the chain, since it utilizes only one person's bandwidth, as opposed to tens, hundreds, or thousands. DCC is quite slow and should go near the bottom, with the 'regular' p2p programs as well.
