ActiveX problems with Internet Explorer
I'm running on windows xp pro sp2... and i usually use firefox, but i wanted to play flight simulator 2004 on zone.com... I logged in, and went to the flighsim page to play with other "zoners" ... but it says that it was "unable to install your game"... As well, i once got a dialog box that said something like "The page may not be displayed corrently because of your activex settings".... I'm sure i have my activex stuff enabled... and i turned all my security settings down.. I also disabled the firewall, and forwareded any ports to my router that zone requires... And, i also uninstalled all of my activex programs that are in Internet Options... Anyone able to provide any help?
Thanks |

Do you get the notification bar under the Address Bar that indicates a need to install a new Active X component? If so, just click on the notification bar, click the option to add Active X component and see if that fixes the problem.

I didn't get what you described PR... but here are a few screen shots of what occurs... at first, i get a script error.. then it asks to download the files needed (which is normal)....
http://home.comcast.net/~w33tq/ss01.JPG however.. for the below pic, it shows that the dialog that i should be getting says that it should look like the one in the pic... hopefully you can see/read it... http://home.comcast.net/~w33tq/ss02.JPG perhaps the script error that i got in the beginning is the problem? I did dlete all cookies and temporary internet files... Last edited by glc; 12-12-2004 at 07:43 PM. Reason: Do NOT post inline images without reading the rules first! |

I'm not seeing the notification bar at the top but it is referenced in the Download Active X Control message in the bottom display. They call it the "yellow bar near the top of your browser". Sure looks like you just need to download the required Active X Control component.

i did get the yellow bar below the address bar a few times before.. but now it just doesn't show up... i did click it when it did show, and nothing happened.. i still go the same "sorry, we were unable to install your game."
Is there anyway that i can reinstall IE6? I saw the download for the SP1 at microsoft.com... but i didn't see the one for SP2... as well, i dont' see ie in the add/remove programs, so i cannot "repair" or remove.... By the way, I get script errors on every zone.com page.... I don't know if it is significant or not.... Thanks |

ok.. i went to the link you posted.... i browsed (in regedit) for IsInstalled at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383} and changed it's value to 0... I went to the MS site to install Internet Explorer 6 for SP1 (link here )... I tried to install and it gave me the same error as always: Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this system. Setup cannot continue.... so i rebooted and before windows desktop appeared, i got a dialog saying something like this: "it appears that internet explorer has been uninstalled. Would you like to delete your personal settings now?" I said NO and tried to install ie6 again.. but got same error message... :-/
ADDITION: Should i try uninstalling sp2 and then reinstall ie? Last edited by w33tq; 12-12-2004 at 06:01 PM. |

sorry about the pics glc...
Perhaps it's just a problem with the website code... and maybe it'll be fixed by tomorrow... i don't hear anyone else complaining about it, so it much just be a coinsidence... if nothing changes in the next few days... i'll just complain some more :-p |

well this may not help but, try setting your active X setting to default for this install, then revert them back after.

the default settings for security is medium... and doesn't allow the installation of unsigned activex controls... I was getting an unsigned activex from microsoft, so my security settins would reject it unless they were set to medium-low or lower...
However, i've gotten it to work... The script errors that i was getting might have been the problem.. I just refreshed the window over and over again until i didn't get the script error.... then it installed fine... Thanks for all of your insight |
