How do you get Wi-Fi?
Does one require a motherboard that has Wi-FI? Or can Wi-FI be added to a computer? |

All you need is a wireless network adapter, they are available in PCI, USB, PCMCIA, and CF - and most new laptops have it built in. Now, to get it to connect to something, you need to be more specific with your wants.

lets say a connection between two computers?
Would they both need a WI-FI integrated motherborad for that or could you just plug as you say a USB WI-FI device? P.S. I might have picked the wrong area to thred this question, sorry. |

What you should probably do in that situation (as long as the PCs aren't more than about 50 feet away) is get a wireless access point or router. The WRT54G from Linksys is a good choice. You can then put that router next to one of the PCs (The one next to the current wired connection and modem) and install a wireless card into the other one. You can network them that way as long as both PC's don't need to be mobile, only one. Check out this diagram, not the best, but it's accurate.

A wireless router acts as a transceiver and eliminates the need for a seperate access point as the diagram depicts. Sorry about that, "To quick of google look not enough I did"

No Problemo,
Wi-Fi sounds so cool. I was worried at first that Wireless was only for people who bought MoBos already with integrated wireless and that if I didn't get one of those kinds I couldn't get wireless later on. :P Thank you for the site and Info.
