FTP server
Recently I turned an old PC into an FTP server for my home. I have two little problems I'm trying to work out but I cant quite get. I am running Bulletproof on win 98.
1: I can log into the server from all but one computer in my house. When ever I try to log onto it with my win xp machine the request times out. This is strange considering I am able to log in with another xp machine. Any idea what is happening? 2: how can I log into the server from outside my home? inside my house I just use “ftp:\\IP ADDYRESS OF SERVER” and it works fine but from outside my house what would I have to do? Thanks -Michael I |

Are you using a router? If so, you have to forward ports 20 and 21 to the local IP address of the server, then from outside you log into your real IP address.

I am using a router and I am already fowarding the ports. I can log in from other PC's in my house but it keeps timing our from one specific XP machine.

If the firewall is enabled on that XP machine, check the configuration or shut it off.

I dont think the problem is with the firewall, I tried turning it off and allowing ports 20 and 21 as acceptions and I still cant get it to work. I enter ftp://192.168.1.111/ in my addyress bar and get a log in screen, the problem comes after I log in (with users that work on other pc's). after I click "log on" that window closes like it normaly does at other pc's and their is the little flashlight in the folder "looking". after a few seconts I get an error saying "An error occured opening that folder on the ftp server. Make sure you have permiatsion to access that folder, Details: The operation timed out"

Wile I don’t think its XP’s firewall I have narrowed it down to something in service pack 2. I was able to log onto the server fine from another XP machine, but since I upgraded that machine to service pack 2 today I can no longer log on to the server from there.
