Been having some trouble with IE 5.0 hanging. When it does, nothing works, the entire screen freeze's. At first I thought that it was just slow loading, however it does not clear itself. (I left it alone one day just to see if it would clear, but after an hour I gave up). The only way to get out of it is to press the Reset button on the PC or turn the PC off.
These hang ups usually occur during a page load and I have a feeling it has something to do with pop-up windows. I have noticed that just before a hang up there will is a very fast flicker on the monitor, the same thing that happens just before a pop-up window appears. I tried to find an answer at MS and their suggestion was to download package 2. I followed their instructions but still get the hang ups. I also clean the temp files regularly but this hasn't helped either. The OS is Win 98SE on a 733 with a 20gig hd. Any ideas as to what is causing this and what needs to be done to correct it would be greatly appreciated.

Pop-up windows are generally javascripted. You could try turning off java temporarily to see if this fixes your problem. It may also not be an IE problem. IE is such a part of the OS that it could be the OS. I have seen the same thing happen quite a bit on my wife's computer. She is running Windows ME. Increasing the cache size seemed to help hers some.

Thanks for the replies.
Thanks for the reply Mosquito. I have downloaded and installed IE 5.5 and I hope this will solve the problem. Will know better in a couple of days or less.
Thanks for the reply Mairving. However you give me much more credit than I deserve. Afraid I don't know how to turn off JAVA Scripting. The most important rule I have learned from PC Mech is that, if you don't know what the hell your doing leave it alone. However I have gotten much better, thanks to everyone here so if you think you can trust me not to mess this up too, too badly it might come in handy to know how to do it. If it involves fooling around with any of the main system files though, best not tell me 'cause I'm just smart enough to be dangerous.

Welcome back my nothern friend, haven't seen you post in a while. If you updated to 5.5 you'll be fine. Hanging was one of the major problems with 5.0 and sometimes you didn't even have to have it open.

Eagle,
I had the same problem with 5.0. Upgraded to 5.5 and haven't had a problem since. 5.5 is a MAJOR upgrade. It's the version that many feel is finally superior to Netscape.

Thanks Mike. Don't get here as often as I'd like, been real busy learning graphics. I do try to get here at least once a week and go over as many of the posts as possible.
Thanks Ron. Sure hope so. My daughter was out surfing her music sites last night and it did not hang. Lately it has been hanging two or three times each time she uses it. So I guess that is a good sign that the hang problems are over. |
