I'm not quite sure what you mean, but if you want to block certain websites, you use Internet options and go into the restricted sites and add the webpage you want to restrict. For example: if you want to block PCMech, you would type www.pcmech.com into the address box in internet options, click apply and then you would no longer be able to access the site.
If this doesn't answer your question thoroughly, please reply to this thread with more details about what you want to do. Scomac

Edit the hosts file.
Both the hosts file and scomac's suggestion virtually do the same thing. ^fo |

i know both of those but the problem with the internet options is that it says its being blocked and has the restricted site icon on it. and with the file you can easily get around it by this example...
you block pcmech.com but you type in pcmech.com/forums or something and you can still get through. what i want to do is just block the entire site so you can use a long url or whatever to get by and also so you cant tell its being blocked. Would be great if it redirected you to a error of some sort |

Maybe try to block the entire IP address? I don't know if the hosts allows IP's or just url/domains.
ex. go to cmd prompt and ping pcmech, find IP, and try to block. There is probably some third party software that acts like a buffer between you and the Internet to do exactly this, somewhere net. ^fo |

host file will let you use IP's or domains
However, in some routers you can blocksites. Better then just in the PC. I know my router I can block a few sites but I have not tested it.

Open the hosts file.
You will see only one entry there: 127.0.0.1 your localhost Underneath that add: 209.68.45.231 216.239.39.99 Save. If you try and access the IP on the right, it will redirect you to the IP on the left. In this case, you would try and access google.com and PCMech would show up. This will give you an error: 127.0.0.1 216.239.39.99 Because you don't host google.com I personally have only used urls/domains, but Byte says it works so its got to work. Are you running a router, because that is a whole another layer? ^fo |
