Angry IE5 doesn't display pdf's

Hi there,

There are some manufacturer's websites which provide its data sheets as pdf's. I'm used that when I click to a link pointing to a pdf, acrobat reader will be started in the background and the pdf is displayed within the browser window.

Now with IE 5.0 this doesn't happen anymore!! >:-( What the heck is going on here? Does anyone know any solution for this? Any help is highly appreciated. TIA

I've already reinstalled acrobat reader, but the problem persists.
BTW I found out that when the pdf link points to a file that is stored on the local hard drive, it will load & display. When the file is stored somewhere in the internet, it will download (I assume this regarding on the time consumption), but it will not display. !?!???

BTW I cannot reinstall IE5, since I've installed office2K service pack 1, and now IE5 installer says "there is already a newer version of IE, install is aborted".

The problem is also reported on other computers of friends which I don't know anything but that the problem exists.

Any help for a man in desperation is highly appreciated! *sigh*

You can also try to update to IE5.5 (if you are willing to do that.) or/and go to http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com and install the compatibility updates. Also check the security settings of your webbrowser. It might have something to do with that too.

You can also right click on the pdf link and select save target as. (then save the pdf file on disk and open)

I wish I could be of more help.

Thank you mosquito for your help. Your tips work fine for me (I did it that way so far), but the others are not willing to do so.

In the meantime I've found the Adobe support site
http://www.adobe.com/support/techgui...wsr/page2.html
which gave me some ideas. Maybe that the pdf.ocx from Acrobat Reader 3 causes the problem. Anyway, configuring Acrobat Reader as a separate "helper application" (which is written on that web page) will do the trick.

We will see.
