Angry IE5, "mailto" links don't work

Hi there,

Formerly I used Netscape 4.7 as my standard browser. When Netscape 6 came out that buggy I converted to IE5...

Now, when I click to a "mailto:receiver@host.com" or similar, I get a message "this can't be done because the standard mail client is not installed properly". (This was never a problem using Netscape as my browser and mail client, since the message occurs only within IE). Now my mail client is Eudora 5, and switching between Outlook Express 5 and Eudora 5 doesn't do any change for that message. BTW both IE5 and Eudora 5 work fine, it's just the linking from the browser that doesn't work.

Any help is highly appreciated. Thanx!

Send a message via AIM to mosquito
Check the "options" dialog in your web-browser, and check if "E-mail" is filled out correctly on the "programs" tab.

That can cause the problem.

You might also go into Tools/Options/Programs and make sure that Outlook Express is your default mail service. The mailto link does not always work but usually does in Netscape and IE.

Thank you mosquito and mairving, the email field in the programs tab reads "Eudora", and ith doesn't matter what is therein (I can change it in the drop down list). The error message persists.

To get it to work with OE
Open Windows Explorer > TOOLS > Folder Options > File types tab
Scroll down to URL: mailto protocol
and check the properties...
Change the OPEN settings to: "C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /mailurl:%1

To get it to work with Eudora as your default mailto: handler, you need to go to the Options of Eudora and turn on Eudora MAPI as always not just when eudora is running.
then do the above except change the open settings for Eudora
The catch is that Eudora mapi is buggy and used to (dont know if the new versions are cleaner) cause errors in other functions.

HTH

Thank you Statica, your tip seems to be good. However while doing your instructions I've got the problem that in my windows explorer file type window there is no "URL:Mailto protocol" entry. Only "URL:News protocol" and such. I then tried to make the entry manually, but then it asks me for an extension. What should I take? If I take MAPIMail it says "already occupied".
