5.5 doesn't hang as often as 5.0, but it does hang and it is necessary to either reset or shut down restart to get it working again.
Any other possibilities?

Service pack OS, and IE, install hotfixes from http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com the usual stuff.
I always install the latest patches, and IE55 hasn't crashed (yet) |

I just did that yesterday, including the upgrade to 5.5. There must be something else that is causing it to hang.

Opps, almost forgot. Mairving in is reply to my other post, IE Hangs, suggested that I turn off Java Scripting. But I'm unsure how to do that. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Eaglefeather..
To disable JS, you need to go to: TOOLS > Internet Options > Security > Click the CUSTOM LEVEL button > Scroll right down to the list of options to the Scripting section and then select PROMPT Active Scripting, Allow paste operations via script, Scripting of JAVA applets. Ok the reason I asked you to put prompt is simply that personally, it is my opinion that the freezes are unrelated, and even if it were, you dont need to set it at NO. However, this will allow you to check to see if its actually cos you went to a site that had a script. For now, simply go to websites and say YES to everytime IE asks u if you would like to run a script. Thus if it crashes you could narrow it down to a JS error. If that is the case, or if you would like to give this a try .. do you have Microsoft VM installed (from when u put in windowsupdate and the like), it sounds like thats the culprit. As an alternative, try using the SUN java run time environment and see if it cuts down on freezes. http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.3/jre/download-windows.html HTH |

Thank you for the info Statica.
I have set JAVA script to Prompt as suggested and will keep a close watch to see what happens. I think I do have VM, assuming it stands for Virtual Machine in which case I guess I would be safe to assume that we are talking about the MSVM file which I'm positive I do have. I seem to remember I had a problem or something with that file a few months ago. However not sure whether it was on this machine or my old PB. This also leads to the question, "If I do have it and I decide to download the Sun Java, will it automatically take over from MSVM, or do I have to do something with MSVM?" I appologize for my ignorance, but it just seems the more I learn the less I know. PS: Something else has turned up. I am now starting to get the "Illegal error" notice and program termination. Had two of them today. Used to get them regularly with NS, but never had one with IE 5.0 and I used it exclusively since just before Christmas. Last edited by Eaglefeather; 05-02-2001 at 05:26 PM. |

Hi Eaglefeather:
You're right, its the virtual machine. I dont know if your OS will give u an option to remove Micro$oft VM, but check out your ADD/REMOVE programs for the check. In general, the JRE takes over for JAVA and JS functions. I know this might be too little too late, and I know that most everyone here likes IE 5.5 but IMHO IE 5.5 isnt very good, provided you apply all hotifxes to IE 5.01 and service packs. From personal experience, I had an inordinate amt of probs with IE 5.5 on Win2K, when my machine would just lock up frequently especially if i dragged the scroll bar down pages that were intensive (lots of text or grafix) .. as opposed to simply clicking my way down webpages. With IE 5.01 SP2 I have had NO problems. When people talk in terms of IE 5.5 being a huge improvement, there is no change in the architecture and NO change in browser engine. |

Never realized how much scripting there was on web pages, my finger was getting worn out from clicking Ok.
![]() Think I've found out that it is not the scripting that is causing the problem. It is still hanging, but it does not hang while the script is loading. After clicking ok on the pop up, the script loads fine. Could one or more of the IE or OS system files be corrupted and if so which is the one(s) would be the most likely candidate or is there a way to find out? |

There are a couple other things you can do - open add/remove programs and click on IE 5.5, and try a repair. If this doesn't help, you can do it again, but this time choose "restore previous configuration" and it will revert back to IE5, which you can update to 5.01SP2 from Windows Update.
