What the hell-ow is going on.

I have been runing at 28.8kbps. I talked to my isp and they said it was the phone line. contacted the tel co. they check the line. Reported that it was all right but had a little noise on it. That was two weeks ago. Tonight i get the pop up saying I am running at 40.0 kbps. Figure that one out . Know I keep getting pop ups saying The operation timed out when attemting to contact forum. pc mech.com. I posted here because it was the only thread that I could get on. The rest timed out. Also when sending email with pictures I will get timed out do you want to wait another 60 seconds. Any help is welcome.

I don't know if this is the case with you but, I have customers down here in PR complaining of the same thing, (I also have personal experience of it here in PR) and I have family members complaining about similar problems back in the UK, to me it seems that suddenly ISP's get the DSL bug and it's almost like in an effort to get you to switch over to the more expensive DSL service, they stop servicing and maintaining the dialup service.
Just a thought but everyone I know at the moment on dialup is having similar problems, I hope you have DSL somewhere in your area.

phone lines can be affected by many differant things from day to day, and the condition and age of the lines, like the older lead covered ones are the worst.
in my ares here in kansas city, mo. the lines are so bad, you are licky to be able to connect at 14.4, and the phone co, says the lines are ok for phone use, but bad for digital and will not replace them.

Just a thought. Most areas that have phone lines now offer dsl. Your telephone company may not offer it but some of the bigger names may. Just a thought. Have a nice day.

I had similar problems last time I was on dial up. If and when I connected at a higher rate, it was faster but way more unstable. Shutting down the pc and reconnecting helped...

Might try replaceing the phone line from the modem to the wall with a new line. And or replace the wall jacks. Also, if you have any cordless phones in the house see if anything changes by unplugging them.

Thanks everyone. The phone co. did repair the line when we where away. Got a hold of isp. When I was running slow we change the settings (slowed them down) we slowed them down to much according to the isp. Also changed phone connection further away from portable phone. I will now have to wait an see. The phone Co. says that portable phones can mess up your comp.
